Welcome to the New Zane Bennett Contemporary Art Gallery in Santa Fe’s Historic Railyard District

In May 2008, Zane Bennett Contemporary Art unveiled the most ambitious new contemporary art gallery in Santa Fe. The nearly 10,000-square-foot space, with multiple, lofted galleries upstairs and down, will mark, in many ways, the maturation of the thriving Railyard District where it will be located, and of the contemporary art scene in Santa Fe.
The gallery’s historic new home at 435 South Guadalupe has been gut-renovated, with meticulous respect for its historic external appearance, as well as for its new role as a leading contemporary-art space. Unlike any other gallery in the city, it will feature a soaring 22-foot-high interior, multiple skylights, and an airy, spacious brightness more reminiscent of Soho than of low-slung, adobe Santa Fe.
The gallery’s greatest distinction, however, will lie in its approach to nurturing artists and connecting them with the ideal collectors. “We won’t be just a passive marketplace,” says Sandy Zane, the owner and director of Zane Bennett Contemporary Art. “We will, instead, be extremely pro-active in finding, promoting, commissioning, and presenting some of the most important contemporary artists, established and emerging, from the United States and abroad. We already are working closely with many of those artists, making sure we understand and can articulate their visions, intentions and techniques to collectors. We also want to be known as a smart, accessible resource for information about contemporary art. We plan to become one of the top galleries in Santa Fe, acting as a conduit between people who want to own superb contemporary art and the artists who are, at this moment, making it.”
The new space, with its size and flexibility, will allow, too, for community arts events and artist-in-residence programs. Zane Bennett Contemporary Art also is planning ambitious collaborations with a number of major museums around the country, both to promote its artists and to draw new audiences of collectors to Santa Fe. “We want to be a true center for contemporary art in this city,” Zane says.
Zane Bennett Contemporary Art will feature four separate exhibition spaces, including the main gallery downstairs (including the atrium), and spaces for photography, works on paper and prints upstairs. The new gallery also has an outside balcony for sculpture, and gallery shop featuring books, prints and smaller pieces of sculpture and art.
