In the early sixties Roger van Straten (b. 1944) completed his studies at the Royal Academy for Visual Arts (Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten) in The Hague,The Netherlands.
After a stint as a freelance graphic designer he turned to journalism. In ‘Het Vaderland’, a daily newspaper, published in The Hague, he was a member of the editorial staff in charge of layout and photography. For over a decade he determined the format of that newspaper.
It was in this period that Roger developed his great passion for art. He began collecting paintings of 19th and 20th century artists as a hobby. During his studies at the Academy he had come in touch with painters of what is now known as Nieuwe Haagse School (The New Hague School) including Bohemen, Bitter, Hussem, Nanninga, Verdijk and many others. He became acquainted with these painters during his frequent visits to De Kikker, Pulchri Studio and De Posthoorn, popular places frequented by artists.
After trying out his hand in public relations, marketing, real-estate brokerage and restaurant management, he decided to turn a new leaf. His long-desired wish came true, his hobby became his profession.
On April 30, 1989, Roger opened his gallery on Spekstraat 3 in The Hague. From the very start it became a great success. Over the years the shop became a popular informal marketplace for artists, collectors and art lovers.
CONSIGNMENT STORE
Under the name Roger with an added Consignatair, the store has now existed for well over 15 years. Roger is continually on the lookout for new challenges and exciting projects in which he can engage as a go-between in the procurement and sales of paintings. It goes without saying that sculpture, ethnographic artifacts and other forms of art are also part of his business.
Roger also offers a wide range of accompanying services. In addition to providing advisory services in a broad sense, Roger can also guide you in strategic procurement and sales at auctions, prepare appraisals with or without an accompanying certificate, as well as provide advice on restoration of paintings or of your precious frames.
